There wasn't a great deal of feedback last year and I didn't have the time or energy to argue the point at the time, I'm afraid! I don't believe that it wouldn't make sense, and I don't believe it would be too complicated, for the reasons stated in my comment above. It's successfully been split before.
Increasing the number of characters/relationships wouldn't solve the problem...but it would sidestep the problem extremely neatly from my point of view! ;)
